UNO

Uno, pronounced /ˈuːnoʊ/;). It is from the Italian and Spanish word, in English it means ‘one’. UNO is a card game played with a specially printed deck. The game was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins. It is a Mattel product since 1992. The general principles of the game are to put it into the Crazy Eights family of card games.

This is all that I found about the evolution of UNO. It is a pretty common card game with a simple version, enabled for family game. Most of the card games are designed for adults, as they play with the money. It is completely designed for children and adults; therefore they are able to play it in a family environment.

UNO is provided with types of different brand as Barbie, Batman, Coca Cola, Cars, Disney Princess, Fantastic Four, Hanna Montana, Harry Potter, Hello Kitty, High School Musical (1, 2, 3), Hulk, Kung Fu Panda, New York City, Nintendo, Peanuts, Pirates of the Caribbean, Scooby Doo, every season of Shrek, The Simpsons, Speed Racer, Spiderman, Star Trek, Superman, Sydney 2000, Toy Story, X-Men and many others. Some of these themes have different extra cards like Barbie has a friendship card which can be swapped with any player you wish. Batman features a joker card which can be discarding to choose 1 to 3 players to draw 1 to 3 cards. Disney Princess has a dragon card, when it is displayed all players must discard a prince card (regardless of color or number) to kill the dragon before continuing play. Harry Potter’s featured card is to Draw Three (instead of Draw Two) card; other feature is a “howler” wild card, if it is played, the player who uses the card may select another player to say all of their cards aloud; also features an “invisibility” wild card where the player can block any card placed down (such as, a card that forces them to draw cards). There is no skipping turn in Hello Kitty; there is no winning and losing also. Hulk has a feature of Gamma Card which makes a player discard all their cards in their hand and draw the same amount discarded. Nintendo has pictures of various Nintendo characters on each card and has writing in classic 8-bit style. Also contains the Power card; this card can be used as a regular Wild card at any time, but can also be used to block a Draw 2 or Wild Draw 4 card played against the player after which it acts as a regular Wild card.

UNO is also available in monitor games like PlayStation, Xbox, Mobile, Nintendo DS, I phone etc.

UNO is also a popular game in the modern world, although it is not played in many places. Only in USA and Canada it is much popular. However it is spreading rapidly all over.

Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and ladders is a classic board game. It is played between 2 or more players on a playing board with numbered grid squares. On certain squares on the grid are drawn a number of “ladders” connecting two squares together and a number of “snakes” also connecting squares together. The size of the grid is most commonly 8×8, 10×10 or 12×12 which actually varies from board to board.

The game was sold as Snakes and ladders in England before Milton Bradley introduced the basic concept in the United States as Chutes and ladders. A newer version was introduced in Victorian England in 1892, possibly by John Jacques of Jacques of London.

Snakes and Ladders originated in India as a game based on certain morality. This game made its way to England, and was eventually introduced in the United States of America by game pioneer Milton Bradley in 1943.

“Moksha Patamu” was perhaps invented by Hindu spiritual teachers to teach children about the effects of good deeds as opposed to bad deeds. The ladders represented virtues such as generosity, faith, humility, etc. The snakes represented vices such as lust, anger, murder, theft, etc. The moral of the game was that a person can attain salvation through performing good deeds whereas by doing evil one takes rebirth in lower forms of life (Patamu). The number of ladders was less than the number of snakes as a reminder that treading the path of good is very difficult compared to committing sins. Presumably the number “100” represented Salvation. In Andhra Pradesh, Snakes and Ladders is played in the name of Vaikuntapali.

The squares of virtue on the original game are Faith (12), Reliability (51), Generosity (57), Knowledge (76), Asceticism (78); the squares of evil are Disobedience (41), Vanity (44), Vulgarity (49), Theft (52), Lying (58), Drunkenness (62), Debt (69), Rage (84), Greed (92), Pride (95), Murder (73) and Lust (99).

I am amazed that it is much unknown to almost all of us. I did not also know before surfing about the game. It is quite interesting.  I enjoyed this as much as Ludo in my childhood. I just played that but did not think about what it actually represents. Like Ludo playing this game along, I recognized that it also shows us a clear effect of the luck in our practical life.

In our life many opportunities come as the snakes and ladders. Snakes represent the bad luck and ladders represent the good luck. In our life there are two types of luck. One is very much controlled by us and another one most of the time depends on the chances. The board game ladders visibly represents the luck which depends on chances.

Ludo

Ludo

Ludo is a simple board game which is similar to Tock and Sorry. The game has been designed for two to four players. In this game the players compete with their four tokens from start to finish according to dice rolls. The game is a simplification of the traditional Indian Cross and Circle game Pachisi. The game is popular in many countries and is known as “Ludi” in the Caribbean, “Fia med knuff” in Sweden and “Mens-erger-je-niet” in the Netherlands. In Poland, the game is known as “The Chinese”. In Germany this game is called “Mensch ärgere dich nicht” which in English means “Man, don’t get mad”. But originally the name came from the Latin word ludo which means “I play”

Pachisi was originated in India by the 6th century. The earliest evidence of this game in India is the depiction of boards on the caves of Ajanta. This game was played by the Mughal Emperors of India; a notable example being that of Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, who played living Pachisi using girls from his harem. Variations of the game made it to England during the British Raj, with one appearing under the name Ludo around 1896, which was then patented.

Ludo is a very popular board game in Bangladesh. In most of the house we can find a Ludo game for everyone to play, especially in leisure time. Usually elders like to play this game very much. In our time I also used to play Ludo with my friends and cousins. We have many interesting events behind the games which I miss very much now. The most common event was that we used to play the game late at night. We played it very silently, therefore our parents could not understand what we were actually doing at late night.

Ludo is my most favorite board game. It is also a creative game which has a great match with luck of our life. The system of playing Ludo also presents the luck of our life. If the dice comes six we can get a chance to go forward. Like in life we also need to wait for that chance to come out and go forward.

Ludo is one of the best family games ever. In Bangladesh when I visit any relatives’ house who are not so familiar to me, I see that they always offer us to play Ludo. If they offer to play chess, I often pretend to say no, because I do not like to play chess very much. But if anyone offers me to play Ludo, I can hardly say no.

Meccano Set

Meccano Set

Meccano is a model construction system comprising re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears which can be connected with nuts and bolts to join the pieces. It enables the building of working models and mechanical devices.

Meccano was invented in 1901 by Frank Horn in England and manufactured by the British company, Meccano Ltd. It is now manufactured in France and China also.

With a Meccano set there was a wide range of models that could be built. Here are the models for which instructions were given in the largest set of the late 1950s, the “Outfit 10”: “Railway Service Crane”, “Sports Motor Car”, “Coal Tipper”, “Cargo Ship”, “Double Decker Bus”, “Lifting Shovel”, “Blocksetting Crane”, “Beam Bridge”, “Dumper Truck”, “Automatic Gantry Crane”, “Automatic Snow Loader”, “4-4-0 Passenger Locomotive”.

On top of these there were instruction leaflets available for: “Combine Harvester”, “The Eiffel Tower”, “Showman’s Traction Engine”, “Twin-Cylinder Motor Cycle Engine”, “Trench Digger”, “Bottom Dump Truck”, “Road Surfacing Machine”, “Mechanical Loading Shovel”

Meccano set is my second most favorite game after Lego. I thought Meccano set was also as much popular as Lego. But I could not find much information like previous toys I have mentioned about. However, I can say that it has a wide popularity. I had a Meccano set which I used to play almost every day when I was a high school student. I have made all the items from the catalog. I am a bit expert in this game more than the video games.

Meccano set is another most creative game after Lego. It is a bit more complicated than Lego, but playing Meccano, children can broaden their intelligence. As I played this game I found several learning rules. In Meccano set you will find a catalog to build the models. The catalog shows a perfect sequence to build any kind of model perfectly. This sequence has also a logical method which is not written in the catalog but you can find that or learn that practically while you will play the Meccano. Like chess, this game also helps us broaden our concentration and patience.  It helps to learn the functions of any construction of cars, planes, helicopters, rockets etc. It gives a sample idea but the sample is very useful for understanding the adjustment of the internal and external mechanism of the products.

Chess

Chess

I hope almost all of you have played the very traditional board game chess. Most of us, especially the elder members of the family enjoy this game a lot. It is a very famous game from ancient time of the civilization. There are many thoughts about the invention of the chess game. It is still very uncertain about the foundation of this game.

Chess is a board game played between two players. It is played on a chessboard, which is a square-checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight by eight grid. At the start, each player controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, where the king is under immediate attack (in “check”) and there is no way to remove or defend it from attack on the next move.

The current form of the game emerged in Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from an older game (Shatranj) of Indian origin. Aspects of art are found in chess composition. Theoreticians have developed extensive chess strategies and tactics since the game’s inception. Chess is now influenced by the abilities of chess programs and the opportunity for online play. In 1997 Deep Blue became the first computer to beat a reigning World Champion in a match when it defeated that time world champion Garry Kasparov.

The tradition of organized competitive chess started in the 16th century. The first official World Chess Champion was Wilhelm Steinitz claimed who won the title in 1886; the current World Champion is Viswanathan Anand from India. Chess is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee named FIDE. Today, chess is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide at home, in clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments.

There are many rules on chess that I found on the internet. I am not going to explain them here; because, it is huge. I hope most you know some general rules about chess. Although it is a very popular game, I do not like to play chess as much as other games. I won twice in chess games. More interestingly, one was in computer and another was in mobile. It was fun though. It is a complicated game and requires much patience to play. One cannot understand how much skill and concentration it needs to play chess and develop one’s talent and expertise unless one plays it.

Chess is a famous which has been found in every era. It is the most ancient game which is still seen in this modern world.

Scrabble

Scrabble is one of the most famous board game which is designed for 2 to 4 players. It is a word game where many individual lettered tiles are arranged for 15-by-15 grid board. The words are needed to arrange here from left to right or downward slanting. The first rule of the Scrabble players is that all the words they are using must be included in the dictionary.

In 1938 Alfred Mosher Butts who was an architect created a word game and named it Lexiko. The Scrabble and Lexiko had the same set of letter tiles. In 1948, James Brunot, and one of the few owners of the original Criss-Crosswords game bought the rights to manufacture the game in exchange for granting Butts a royalty on every unit sold. Though he left most of the game (including the distribution of letters) unchanged. Brunot slightly rearranged the “premium” squares of the board and simplified the rules. He also changed the name of the game to “Scrabble” which means “to scratch frantically”. The company is now a subsidiary of Mattel, Inc.

The name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. in the United States and Canada; and of Mattel elsewhere. Variations of the game include Literati, Alfapet, Funworder, Skip-A-Cross, Scramble, Spelofun, Square-write, Palabras Cruzadas (“crossed words”), Word for Word, Lexulous, Wordipelago and Words With Friends. While these games are similar to the original Scrabble game, they include minor variations. For example, Literati draws random tiles instead of providing a finite number of tiles for the game, assigns different point levels to each letter and has a slightly different board layout whereas Lexulous assigns 8 letters to each player instead of the customary 7.

The game contains 100 tiles, 98 of which are marked with a letter and a point value ranging from 1 to 10. The game is sold in 121 countries in 29 different language versions. So far, one hundred and fifty million sets have been sold worldwide.

For me, Scrabble is the best family game ever. It is one of the best ways to enrich vocabulary. I have three sets of Scrabble game. I have a scrabble on mathematics also. But I did not find any information on mathematical scrabble. I enjoy playing that as much as the crossword scrabbles.

Scrabble is one of the most popular games which is found in every generation. It is not a traditional game. It is always modern in every era. It is very nice for us that the companies are providing the play sets as portable. It is a game to play at anywhere at anytime. I think it is the best game for any vacation. Now-a-days Scrabble is also available in pc game, online and even in Nintendo Game Boy, PlayStation, Xbox and mobile also. So, there are many options for this intelligent game.

Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels is a brand of die cast toy car. The term die-cast toy here refers to any toy or collectible model produced by using the die casting method. The toys are made of metal, with plastic, rubber or glass details. It was introduced by American toymaker Mattel on September 7, 1968.

The cars and trucks were originally manufactured to approximately 1:64 scales and designed to be used on associated Hot Wheels track sets. There were sixteen castings released in 1968. Eleven of them were designed by Harry Bentley Bradley. By 1970, a series of 1:43 scale “Gran Toros” made by Mebetoys in Milan, Italy, were introduced. More recently, a range of highly detailed adult collector vehicles, including replicas of NASCAR and Formula One cars, have found success. Roughly 10,000 different models of Hot Wheel Cars have been produced over the years.

Hot Wheel Vehicles are authorized by the General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Motor car makers. Hot Wheels also got licensed from Ferrari, Mazda and Toyota to make a scale model of their cars.

To make a Hot Wheels version of a current-model car, Mattel looks at design blueprints of the full sized car. There is an example of the Chrysler 300 Hot Wheel car. First, the Hot Wheels Team and Mattel went to Chrysler to look at the design of the 300 and the actual car. Chrysler licensed the blueprints to Mattel and the Hot Wheel Team for the purpose of producing the model car. Chrysler then required Mattel to return the blueprints after the Hot Wheel team was finished studying them.

Hot Wheels is also popular as a video game. I did not get the opportunity to play Hot Wheels play set, but I got the chance to play the game on my pc and PS2. When I start to play the game, I get very excited and I forget about everything what is happening around me. Hot Wheels is my most favorite video game. I enjoy playing it any time. I still have a dream of getting a real Hot Wheels play set.

The success of Hot Wheels in 1968 procession was solidified and merged with the 1969 releases. After that period Hot Wheels effectively established itself as the hottest brand of small toy car models in the USA.

Jigsaw Puzzle

Jigsaw puzzle is made by irregular shapes of cardboard, wood or plywood which is cut into small pieces. It can be interconnected with one another; and after interconnecting all the parts we get the full picture of a scenario. Most of the jigsaw puzzles’ sceneries are of nature, jungle, mountains, oceans, animals, buildings and castles etc. For children, the cartoon image and the image of the animals, fruits and flowers are very popular. So, any kind of picture can be used for jigsaw puzzle. Now-a-days many companies offer to turn personal photographs into puzzles.

The amazing game jigsaw puzzle was invented in 1760 by John Spilsbury. He was an engraver and mapmaker. One day he mounted one of his maps on a sheet of hardwood and cut around the borders of the countries with the use of fine-bladed marquetry saw. After that it became as an educational tool. It was used in teaching British children for their geography subject. The idea of this puzzle caught on that and until 1820 it remained as a primarily educational diversion. The cardboard puzzles were first introduced in the late 1800’s.

The treadle saw was used to make jigsaw puzzle which was introduced in 1880. A fret saw was actually used in the cutting of the puzzle pieces – the set up itself was called saw jig. Plywood was used towards the end of the 19th century and pictures were either glued or painted on the front of the wood. The maker would then trace in pencil on the back to indicate where the saw cuts should be made. Very old wooden puzzles can still show leftovers of pencil markings.

In the evolution of Jigsaw Puzzle, one strategy was to make cardboard puzzles more intricate and difficult. Thus it became more appealing as much to adults as to children.  Another was to use jigsaw puzzles as premiums for advertising purposes.  Einson-Freeman of Long Island City, New York began to make puzzles that were offered with toothbrushes in 1931.  But more important to the Jigsaw Puzzle’s continuing success was the introduction of the weekly puzzle in the media.

Three dimensional puzzles have become very popular in the modern days. Many of these are made of wood and Styrofoam. There are also computer versioned jigsaw puzzles. It can be played on the internet, sometimes free or sometimes on payment. This computer version puzzles are available in CD also.

This is a picture of world’s largest jigsaw puzzle. It has been cut into 24,000 pieces. It is also available in 3000 pieces. Many players joined in a competition and took a challenge to solve the puzzle in the shortest time. Here is a link; you can also join in this competition.

http://www.worldslargestpuzzle.com/index.html

Jigsaw Puzzle is my most favorite game. In my childhood when it was time to play alone I would prefer to play jigsaw puzzle. It gave me more pleasure than any other thing. I have many jigsaw puzzles and I still love to play them. The jigsaw puzzles with more odd shapes make me more curious to solve the puzzle faster. I think it is the most intelligent game for a person to understand the puzzle of the real life also. Our life is also divided into many various shapes like the puzzle pieces; and we also have to interconnect them to get the whole picture of our life.

Lego

Lego is a line of construction toys which is manufactured by the Lego Group. The manufacturing company is situated in Billund, Denmarkwhich was established in 1932. The company name Lego was invented by Christiansen. The name Lego has come from Danish phrase “leg godt”, which means “play well”. The name could also be interpreted as “I put together” and “I assemble” in Latin. The motto of Lego Group is kun det bedste er godt nok which means “only the best is good enough”. This motto was created by Ole Kirk to encourage his employees never to skimp on quality, a value he believed in strongly. The motto is still used today within the company.

The use of plastic as toy was not highly regarded by retailers and consumers. Many of the Lego Group’s shipments were returned due to its poor sales; it was thought that plastic toys could never replace wooden toys. In 1958 the modern brick design was developed; but it took another five years to find out the right material for it.

Manufactured Lego bricks occur at a number of locations around the world. Brick decorations and packaging is done at plants in Denmark, the United States, Mexico and the Czech Republic. The Lego Company estimates that in the course of five decades it has sold some 400 billion Lego blocks (East Valley tribune. 21-12-2208). The average annual production of Lego bricks is approximately 20 billion (2×1010) per year, or about 600 pieces per second: if all the produced Lego bricks ever be divided equally among a world population of six billion, each person would have 62 Lego brick. (lego.com. Retrieved May 12, 2007)

One of the largest Lego sets ever commercially produced is a ‘minifig-scaled’ edition of the Star Wars Millenium Falcon. Designed by Jens Kronvold Fredericksen, it was released in 2007 and has 5,195 pieces. Later it exceeds by 5,922 pieces of Taj Mahal. Over the years, Lego have licensed themes from several cartoon and film franchises. These include Star Wars, Batman, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Spider-Man, Ben 10, Toy Story and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Lego is my most favorite toy. Because, I think it is the most creative game which has ever been invented. It helps us to enrich our thoughts of model building or designing any figure arts. But the price of the Lego is too high to afford by any family. I think the price of the Lego should be reduced to make it available for the children of all countries.

Lego art is also very popular now-a-days. Several artists have used Lego in their work, which is now described as ‘Lego art’ or ‘brick art’. The Little Artists John Cake and Darren Neave have created an entire Modern Art collection in Lego form. Danish artist Jorn Ronnau created a sculpture called The Walker out of 120,000 Lego bricks for the travelling exhibition ‘Homo Futurus’ at the end of the 1980s.

Lego is a unique game of colorful interlocking plastic bricks. The bricks can be assembled and connected in many ways to build vehicles, buildings, working robots and many other things. Any constructed model of Lego bricks can be made apart again. Now this toy has achieved an international appeal, with an extensive support for Lego movies, games, video games, competitions, and four Lego themed parks across Europe and America. Lego was declared “Toy of the Century” by “Fortune” and by the British Association of Toy Retailers.

Barbie, the beautiful creation

I guess, almost all of you heard about the name of the famous doll, Barbie. It is the most popular doll in the world. Now-a-days many girls start to play with the Barbie doll from the early stage of their life. It becomes a role model of their life.

The famous doll Barbie was first released on March 9, 1959 at the American international Toy Fair in New York. Ruth handler is the creator of this Barbie doll; she named the doll after her teenage daughter Barbara. It was originally based on the German doll Bild Lili.

Barbie was one of the first toys to have a marketing strategy based extensively on television advertising which has been copied widely by other toys. It is estimated that over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries till 2005 (BBC News. September 22, 2006). Now, Mattel Corporation, manufacturer of Barbie, claims that three Barbie dolls are sold every second; and that there will be 7 rings around the world if arranged all the Barbie dolls (statistics of 2002 by Mattel Corp.).

The standard range of Barbie dolls and related accessories are manufactured to approximately 1/6th scale, which is known as play-scale. Barbie products include not only the range of dolls with their clothes and accessories, but also a large range of Barbie branded goods such as books, apparel, cosmetics, jewelries and video games etc.

My personal experience about Barbie is that I became very much eager for this doll since my childhood as its innocent appearance with a beautiful smile which attracted my attention deeply in my heart. I have never seen such a beautiful creation by human. The creators of Barbie doll gave it a very lively look which I have not found in any other doll yet. Until now, I have had a large collection of the Barbie brand. It gives me a pragmatic fantasy for my life. Now-a-days, I do not get much time to spend on my collection due to my studies and other routine commitments of life. But still the feelings about my collection are evergreen in my thoughts and mind.

Barbie is known to be the most popular doll all over the world. Many new dolls are coming with the same concept of Barbie but they have not got the same popularity and the business success as Barbie got. Barbie has already had a big fame all over the world, especially to the little girls. The management of Barbie has so far arranged many events across the world to help create awareness amongst the future generation girls. Now, Barbie has a large community. It has even its own blogs. I hope Barbie will always hold high its popularity.

Ruth handler would watch her daughter Barbara playing with paper dolls. Barbara and her friends would play as adults with jobs and mimic. Mrs. Handler felt that the girls were expressing their future dreams through their playing with those paper dolls. She realized the lack of adult dolls on the market and recognized the need of these. Accordingly she got an idea to release a doll which will be characterized for the girls of future; and thereupon she made her famous Barbie doll. Around 350,000 Barbie dolls were sold during the first year of production.
